Enter: Woodpecker
This morning I had one outside my window
5:30 a.m. this bird is plugging away at a nearby tree
Wow!! I never knew they were so LOUD!
From a sound sleep, being continually woke into semi-consciousness..
It evokes some really odd and disturbing dreams....
....Like Quoth the Raven...
I kept wondering if it was my alarm
BOOM!
Now I'm sitting straight up...I'm awake!!
....silence....
Ahhhhh....thank you, neighbor
I'm pretty sure he just scared it away....

And that laugh they have. So annoying.
WT,
There's just no getting around the fact that woodpeckers are a lot more fun (and funny) when they are cartoon characters.
My nightmare was always Morning Doves, who incessantly announced themselves at far too early an hour of the morning.
Shawn: You KNOW he was laughing out there.. wreaking havoc on neighborhoods like that...
TH: I wonder why they don't have a cartoon morning dove character...
stupid woodpeckers. the human doesnt like them, says they peck holes in the house
Nooter: I don't think squirrels like them very much either... that's definitely pecking too close to home...
Here in the navel of Canada (out in the gawdforsaken wilderness) it's woodpeckers, doves, chickadees, some bird that sounds like he's gargling and hooting at the same time, FROGS (capitalized because they are LOUD & constant), plus all manner of buzzing, flying, crawling, hopping, and blood thirsty insects. Oh, and coyotes, skunks, & racoons just to keep the evening hours interesting for the MightyHunterShepherdBitch (who barks & howls to warn them away).
With the windows closed I don't hear much of anything, but open the door and it's cacophony!
Wow!! I guess with a symphony like that, you probably get used to it on some level... We city folk, when away from traffic, get used to the relative quiet, I guess. Someday I'd love to be more out in the suburbs, but hats off to hearty people like you who hold down the fort out in the gawdforsaken wilderness...
The first time I heard a woodpecker was when I stayed at my mother-in-law's ranch. It was pecking at 7am right next to the guest bedroom window. Sounded like a jackhammer, albeit a rhythmic one.
I think my MIL trained it to peck at our window to distract us, lest we be doing the wild thing in her home.
LOLOL...gotta love MIL's, I think they not only have a pact with woodpeckers, but house pets, car alarms, and thunder!... well, maybe that's giving them too much credit...but ya always gotta wonder...
